Timo Tembuyser is van huis uit architect: hij behaalde in 2014 zijn masterdiploma Architectuur & Stadsontwerp van de Gentse Universiteit. In de vijfjarige studieperiode die daaraan voorafging, werkte hij niet zozeer aan daadwerkelijke civiele projecten, eerder aan theoretische ontwerpen — met name het bouwen van een conceptuele brug tussen architectuur, stedenbouw, sociologie en theater. Zo ontwikkelde zich een interesse in grootstedelijke processen en de manieren waarop wij, dolende mensen, wel of niet met elkaar omgaan in de huidige maatschappij.
Het verlangen om dat theoretische onderzoek in de praktijk te brengen leidde hem naar Nederland, waar hij in 2019 afstudeerde aan de performance-opleiding van de Toneelacademie in Maastricht (Institute of Performative Arts). Daarnaast schoolde hij zich als zanger binnen de afdeling Muziektheater van het Rotterdam Conservatorium (Codarts University for the Arts).
Als zanger en maker poogt hij de ogenschijnlijk onoverbrugbare werelden van zangtechniek en stembevrijding met elkaar te verbinden. Hij werkt met zangers en niet-zangers die zich samen verbinden in de zoektocht naar een gemeenschappelijke klank. Koormuziek, het samen-zingen, is voor Timo de meest accurate metafoor voor menselijke verbinding. In een samenleving komen verschillende pulsen, geluiden en melodieën hoe dan ook samen; hetzij in harmonie, hetzij in een kakofonie.
In zijn werk zoekt hij naar verschillende vormen waarin muziek in een theatrale context komt te staan. Zijn performances zijn steeds andere theatrale en ruimtelijke kaders voor nieuwe vocale composities. Hiermee tracht hij de mentale wereld te verbinden met de fysieke: het concept met het woord, de tekst met de stem, de klank met het lichaam, het lichaam met de ruimte — noem het muziektheaterarchitectuur. Timo is als jonge maker verbonden aan Festival Cement, Productiehuis Theater Rotterdam en het TransLAB van Muziektheater Transparant.
MEMENTUM en MISSA HOMO SACER waren de twee werken waarmee hij in 2019 afstudeerde van de Toneelacademie. In MISSA HOMO SACER zet een vijfstemmig vrouwenkoor zich af tegen een zondig mannenlichaam dat te biecht gaat in zeven poëtische lezingen, opgehitst en gezalfd door een man op elektrische gitaar. MEMENTUM is een koorinstallatie met zestien zangers, die zich door partituur en improvisatie heen toezingen naar elkaar, naar het publiek, naar eenheid, naar de stilte.
Samen met regisseuse Naomi Steijger startte hij in 2017 een theatrale reeks luistervoorstellingen onder de naam Concrete Voices. Het is een levenswerk waarin ze de bewoners van negen flatgebouwen in negen wereldsteden omvormen tot een groots virtueel koor. De bewoners zingen samen een nieuw, grootstedelijk Requiem. Met hun pilot-aflevering 88 woningraten wonnen ze de eerste prijs van de NTR podcastprijs in 2018.
Samen met performer en zangeres Hélène Vrijdag vormt Timo sinds 2019 een makersduo. Ze zijn twee stemmen in twee lijven die zoeken naar de meest eerlijke dialoog. Zingend pogen ze de kaders en de mythes waarin hun stemmen en lijven gevangen lijken te zitten, steeds opnieuw te belichamen.
Ook als performer beweegt hij zich graag van de ene naar de andere vorm in het fluïde muziektheaterlandschap: van koorconcert tot dansopera en van musical tot audio-performance. Hij speelde afgelopen seizoenen in o.a. Meiskes & Jongens (Deep Bridge, Antwerpen, 2018), Parapluies de Cherbourg (OT Rotterdam, 2019), 8: METAMORPHOSIS (Nicole Beutler Projects, Amsterdam, 2019) en is lid van het Swara Vocal Ensemble (Brussel).
biography
Timo finished his Master’s in Architecture at the University of Ghent while exploring the theatricality of public spaces in cities. Spatiality tends to be a major element in theatre as well. Bringing this theory in practice, he moved to the Netherlands, where he studied performance at the Institute of Performative Arts Maastricht until 2019. In the meantime, he trained himself as a singer at the Codarts University of Arts Rotterdam, at the Department of Musical Theatre. He lives in Rotterdam, to research the field that could be named “architecture of musical theatre.”
As a singer and creator, he attempts to bridge the seemingly polar opposite worlds of rigid singing techniques and vocal liberation. He collaborates with both singers and non-singers, who connect in the search of common sound. Choir music, the act of singing together, is what Timo would describe as an accurate image of human connection: they will always collide, whether in harmony or dissonance. In his own work, Timo always searches for a different spatial and theatrical frame, in which to build a new vocal composition. As a creator, Timo has collaborations with Festival Cement and TransLAB by Transparant.
MEMENTUM and MISSA HOMO SACER were the two graduation pieces Timo wrote to conclude his studies at the Institute of Performative Arts in 2019. In MISSA HOMO SACER, a quintet of female voices revolts against a male body, confessing his sins in seven poetic lectures. MEMENTUM is a choir installation, wherein sixteen singers let themselves be led to and from each other, into improvisation and from the scores, into the audience, into unison, into silence.
The theatrical podcast series he created together with director Naomi Steijger is called Concrete Voices; a life’s work in which they transform the inhabitants of nine apartment buildings around the world into one grand virtual choir. Timo composes a new city-like requiem for each building and together with Naomi they invite, encourage and follow the inhabitants in the process. Under the productional care of the Rotterdam Theatre, Timo and the theatre maker and singer Hélène Vrijdag started a quest in search of an honest dialogue between a body and a voice. This quest is embodied in a series of vocal productions which they started to perform in 2019 (La Loba is currently in production).
Timo is one of the more versatile performers and loves to follow the fluidity of the musical theatre landscape. In previous seasons he played a part in Meiskes en Jongens (Deep Bridge, 2018), Parapluies de Cherbourg (OT Rotterdam), 8: METAMORPHOSIS (Nicole Beutler Projects, 2019). Up to the present day he is a member of Swara Vocal Ensemble (Brussels).
